Tony Ally was born in Luton and brought up in Catford. He was diagnosed with a hearing disorder as a child and used lip-reading to work with his coach, winning his first senior national title at 12. In 1999 he was the first British diver to win a European Championships Gold medal, and he won Silver at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

He finished 7th in the 3m synchronised event with Mark Shipman and 12th in the Individual in Sydney in 2000. He finished 5th in the synchronised 3m at Athens in 2004. He went on to be the flag bearer for the English contingent at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where he won silver in the synchronized 3m springboard. Tony mentored and coached diving hopefuls for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
