Percy Gerald Ames was born on 12th September 1880 in Lewisham. Described as one of the leading lights of British fencing in the early 20th century, he competed in the Stockholm Olympics in 1912 in the Men's Individual Epee, making it through to the semi-finals. He was also known as an actor and was one of the earliest stars of British cinema, appearing in over 60 silent films. He also directed a number of films and appeared on stage. He died on 2nd July 1933 in Knightsbridge.
