Colin Moynihan was born on 13th September 1955. He competed in the 1980 Moscow Olympics as the cox for the GB men's eight rowing squad. In 1981 he coxed the team to gold medal success in the World Championships.

He was elected as a Conservative MP to represent Lewisham East in 1983. From 1987 to 1990 Moynihan was the Minister for Sport under Margaret Thatcher. He lost his seat to Labour in 1992. He was Shadow Minister for Sport in the Lords from July 2003 to February 2005. On 5th October 2005 he was elected Chairman of the British Olympic Association for the run up to the 2012 London Olympics.
