Christopher Chataway was born on 31st January 1931. At the 1952 Helsinki Games he took 5th place in the 5000m. He retired from international athletics after the 1956 Olympics, although he continued to race for Thames Hare and Hounds.

He was elected as a Conservative to the London County Council in 1958 for Lewisham North, and was then selected to stand for Parliament for the same seat. He was successful although his majority was slashed in the 1964 General Election and in 1966 he lost his seat.
